SCC National Archery Champions

25/01/18

Following last year’s National on Target Junior Club of the Year Award, the Archery Club welcomed twelve new members at the start of the new school year for their beginners course.

Archers were coached by our home grown Level 1 student and staff coaches and progressed rapidly, soon becoming fully fledged club members and eligible to be considered for competition. Meanwhile, the installation of the Danage wall was completed in the main sports hall which has enabled the club to have a permanent target wall for shooting indoors. This fixture was sponsored by WW Martin, Swale and Clickers Archery to whom we are really grateful.

The school hosted the annual inter-county indoor competition on 25 November 2017 between Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Essex and the club was invited to field a team in all the bow type categories. Ten students formed the team and represented the school shooting really well up against the county team members and coming third overall.

This was a warm up for the next big competition event held in Warwickshire on 2 December 2017. The club sent a twenty-one strong team to compete in the Archery GB Junior Indoor National Championships at Stoneleigh Park National Agricultural Exhibition Centre. This event needed a 3.20am start to travel to the competition ready to start shooting at 9.00am. It was worth the early alarm call as the team returned with eight medals and the following National Champions:

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS:
U14 Ladies Barebow – Lily Warner.
U16 Ladies Longbow – Rayelle Ennels-Smith and overall Ladies Longbow Champion.
U18 Barebow – Harry Stew.
U18 Longbow – Samuel Homewood and Overall Gents Longbow Champions fifth year running.

The next major event for the club will be the Kent County Indoor Championships held in Tenterden on Sunday 28 January 2018, where we will send thirty competitors, representing the largest junior club in the country. The club and school are also playing host to the Archery GB Level 2 coaching course which gives junior archers the chance to benefit from additional coaching opportunities.
